Helmholtz Portfolio topic MEM-BRAIN aims at the development of selective membranes for the separation of Gases to obtain CO2, O2 and H2.

The climate active CO2 which is emitted by power stations when burning fossil fuels should be recovered to enable the use of this CO2 as resource for the chemical industry.

In the Helmholtz Portfolio MEM-BRAIN membranes are developed and characterized, process es are analyzed and the evaluated in aspects of economy and ecology.

Speaker for the Portfolio MEM-BRAIN is Forschungszentrum Jülich. Partners are the Helmholtz-Centres Berlin and Geesthacht, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, RWTH Aachen, UT Twente and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. At KIT Institut für Mikroverfahrenstechnik (IMVT) and Institut für Werkstoffe der Elektrotechnik (IWE) participate.

Work at IMVT encompasses the integration of metal supported ceramic membranes in micro structured modules and the design of these modules. Furthermore the transport behavior of gases through multi-layered membranes is investigated by experiments and simulation.
